Adam Vaitilingam QC recently prosecuted Jeffery Barry following the killing of Kurdish asylum seeker Kamil
Ahmed in Bristol in July 2016. Barry was a man with severe mental health issues, and had spent
many years in Rampton and Broadmoor hospitals.

In June 2016 Barry had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, and was released just hours before
the killing, against the advice of the treating psychiatrist. At the trial, psychiatrists disagreed over
whether Barry was guilty of murder or of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility, but the
jury unanimously convicted him of murder.
