On 28 August 2024 at Gloucester Crown Court, Samwen Muiruri was convicted by unanimous jury verdicts of the murder of Kidane Gebrehiwot and of possessing a bladed article. His conviction followed a two-week long trial prosecuted by Edward Hetherington.
CCTV footage secured as part of the investigation showed that Muiruri was earlier involved in an argument with Mr Gebrehiwot on Eastgate Street, Gloucester. Muiruri went to his home nearby, collected a knife and returned to confront Mr Gebrehiwot on the street outside his property, inflicting a fatal stab wound to the heart.
Muiruri consistently denied that he was the man involved in the incident. Evidence at trial included CCTV footage, blood pattern analysis, mobile telephone cell site data and DNA profiling.
Today, at a further hearing in Gloucester, Muiruri was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years before he is eligible for parole.
